Italian cycling celebrates, at the conclusion of the Elite women’s road race at the World Championships in Zurich, the beautiful bronze medal of Elisa Longo Borghini, who finished in third place in the race on the roads of German Switzerland won by Belgian Lotte Kopecky, who confirms the title won in Glasgow last year, ahead of the American Chloé Dygert and the 32-year-old Italian.
The three podium finishers were the protagonists of an attack that included German Liane Lippert, Dutch Demi Vollering and Australian Ruby Roseman-Gannon in the leading group. The chasing group finished with a delay of 1'06" and was ruled by Belgian Justine Ghekiere.
For Elisa Longo Borghini è it is the seventh medal at the rainbow level: in addition to the bronze won today in Zurich, she has won five other third places (Elite road race in Limburg in 2012 and in Imola in 2020, relay in Flanders in 2021, in Glasgow in 2023 and this year in Zurich), as well as a silver medal in relay in Wollongong in 2022.
Today's is also Italy's fifth medal at the 2024 World Championships: so far the Azzurri have won a gold with Lorenzo Finn in the Junior road race, a silver with Filippo Ganna in the Elite time trial and three bronzes with Edoardo Affini in the Elite time trial, with the mixed Italian relay team (Edoardo Affini, Mattia Cattaneo, Filippo Ganna, Elisa Longo Borghini, Soraya Paladin and Gaia Realini) oltrre to Longo Borghini on Saturday.
