Abolito the extra point for the fastest lap

The additional point for the fastest lap will be abolished in 2025. This was decided by the FIA council chaired by grand chief Mohammed Ben Sulayem and meeting in Paris by video conference.

The fastest lap had been rewarded with an extra point in the first ten years of the Formula One World Championship, from 1950 to 1959. Then it had been buried for sixty’years, until in 2019 it had been unbelievably exhumed: one of many rules that in recent years, instead of producing spectacle, have created controversy.

È evidently, the rule change è was launched because of the Racing Bulls’ decision, in the Singapore Grand Prix a month ago, to stop Daniel Ricciardo for an extra pit stop so that he, with fresh tires, could snatch the fastest lap from Lando Norris, a direct competitor in the fight for the world title of Max Verstappen, who drives the Red Bull, “parent company” of the Racing Bulls.

The paradox è that Ricciardo, after this help given to Verstappen, the extra point ù did not earn it because é finished well beyond the top ten, which are the only beneficiaries, and then è was fired by the team, causing him to retire from Formula 1.
