Tour de France, Caen time trial is Remco Evenepoel’s, Tadej Pogacar yellow jersey

Belgian Siudal Quick-Step world champion Remco Evenepoel won the 33-kilometer time trial with start and finish in Caen, stage five of the Tour de France.

Evenepoel beat UAE Team Emirates KRG’s Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, last year’s winner and three-time Grande Boucle triumphant, by 16 seconds. Third was Edoardo Affini (Team Visma Lease a Bike), long in the lead and eventually 33 seconds behind.

Pogacar snatched the yellow jersey from Alpecin-Deceunink Dutchman Mathieu Van der Poel, 18th at 1’44”. Partially disappointed was Jonas Vingegaard: the Danish Tour winner in 2022 and 2023 finished 13th at 1’21”.

In the overall standings Pogacar has a 42-second lead over Evenepoel and 59 over Arkea-B&B Hotels Frenchman Kevin Vauquelin; Vingegaard is fourth at 1’13”.
