Gymnast Bonicelli underwent neck surgery: he is in a medically induced coma

A lot of apprehension about the condition of Lorenzo Bonicelli. The Italian fell, disastrously, on his neck during the rings exercise at the Universiade being held in Essen, Germany. Immediately there was a realization of the severity of the’injury, as the’Italian athlete remained motionless on the platform.

After being, promptly, secured to the stretcher by the medical staff, Lorenzo Bonicelli was transported to the nearby University Hospital where he underwent surgery on his cervical vertebrae.

“Lorenzo is in a medically induced coma after the surgery. It will take at least 10 days to know his condition. The entire gymnastics family is praying and rooting for full recovery!”” the words of Steve Butcher, director of the international federation (FIG), via social media.

Promise of artistic gymnastics, The 23-year-old from Abbadia Lariana (Lecco, Italy), has always been referred to as one of the possible major players in the next Olympics scheduled to take place in Los Angeles (2028). “We want to express our closeness to Lorenzo Bonicelli’s family and to him personally, hoping that everything will work out for the best” the statements of coach Paolo Bucci. The men’s artistic gymnastics team has been withdrawn from the Universiade.
