The Fgi has issued an update on the condition of Lorenzo Bonicelli, the gymnast injured on the rings during the Universiade in Germany after Professor Andrea Ferretti, president of the medical commission of the federerginnastica and director of the Coni Institute of Sports Medicine, met with German colleagues.

The consultation showed that “Lorenzo has the results of a cervical distorsion injury with subluxation of the fifth vertebra, which was promptly reduced in an unexceptionable manner in surgery. There remains neurological damage, the extent of which is not, assessable”.

The 23-year-old gymnast is in good general condition but a tracheotomy was performed to facilitate his breathing, and at least one’additional week of hospitalization will be required before his discharge can be assumed.

“Professor Ferretti, who also met in the ward with the Bonicelli family, is in constant contact with Federal President Andrea Facci – continues the statement – he has already initiated procedures for the transfer with maximum security to a rehabilitation center in Italy, on the ways and terms of which will follow subsequent communications”.

In the meantime, Lorenzo is vigilant “and surrounded by the loving affection of mom Vania, dad Simone and girlfriend Lisa Rigamonti, who from the moment of the accident rushed to the German Rhine Ruhr town from Abbadia Lariana and have never left him alone”.

“As did the entire Italian gymnastics movement, starting with the CAT in Seveso, where he trained every day, and the club in Lecco where he had grown up”,

the federginnastica statement concludes.
