Jannik Sinner already a very likely US Open finalist: the word of Jimmy Connors. The legendary U.S. champion, still the record holder for the number of tournaments won in singles in the Open era, recently dwelt on the difficulties Novak Djokovic is facing at this stage of his career. But, in doing so, he used words of high praise aimed precisely at the from San Candido, who is currently busy at the Cincinnati Masters 1000.

“Djokovic made it to the semifinals at Wimbledon –recalled Jimmy Connors on his personal podcast -But he hasn&#8217t played up to his best level, partly because of the injury that occurred in the match with Cobolli. He will arrive at the US Open without a match, but he will have to win three very difficult ones consecutively. And between quarters, semifinals and finals, in two out of three he will probably face Alcaraz and Sinner”.

The latter two, according to Connors, represent a challenge that today’s Novak Djokovic may not be able to overcome. “Playing against Alcaraz or Sinner is tough as hell, especially if you find them one after the other, in a tournament that is played over five sets like the US Open. Not to mention the heat that might be in New York“, pointed out the man who finished at the top of the ATP rankings all the years from 1974 to 1978.

Connors, while considering Sinner and Alcaraz the best in tennis today, does not, however, want to write Djokovic off as finished. “Never call him a goner – he pointed out – Sure, I would have liked to see him in Cincinnati for at least 2-3 matches. His absence is the’only thing that worries me, because he left Wimbledon 2025 in the semifinals but has been stationary since then”.
