When the derby between Lorenzo Musetti and Flavio Cobolli is played at the US Open: the history

Tomorrow at 5 p.m. Italian time, the all-blue derby between Lorenzo Musetti and Flavio Cobolli will open the Louis Armstrong Stadium court program and will be valid as the third-round match of the US Open men’s singles.
The two blues are both class of 2002, Musetti was born on March 3 and Cobolli on May 6, and both have won two tournaments in their careers on the ATP major circuit, the difference being that Flavio won them this year, both on clay, in Bucharest and Hamburg.
Lorenzo’s two triumphs, on the other hand, date back to 2022, also in Hamburg and then on the concrete in Naples, beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final on the first occasion and Matteo Berrettini in the second.
Up for grabs is a place in the round of 16, which at Flushing Meadows neither has yet reached: Musetti stopped in the third round in 2022 and 2024, Cobolli in 2024.
This will be an unprecedented challenge at the major circuit level; at the youth level, on the other hand, there is a previous one, dating back to 2018 on clay in Santa Croce sull’Arno and it was Musetti who won with a score of 6-4 4-6 6-3.
