Jannik Sinner proved flawless in the Italian derbies. The world number two and seeding leader of the Vienna ATP 500 beat Flavio Cobolli, number 22 in the ATP rankings, with a final score of 6-2 7-6, winning his 17th challenge in as many matches against Italian tennis players.

Early in trouble the Roman, forced to cancel already a break ball in the opening game’s opening game. The third game, however, is the good one for the South Tyrolean who gets the break with a splendid forehand cross court (2-1). Jannik confirmed the break on serve (3-1) and repeated it in the fifth game with a pair of winning returns (4-1). In the seventh game Cobolli breaks a streak of five games in a row by the world number two, who closes the score on serve in the next one (6-2).

The second set is much more hard-fought: Cobolli concedes a break point in the fifth game but Sinner misses the answer; in the eleventh game the top seed conquers three more consecutive break points but the Roman saves with his serve. So it comes to the tie-break where Sinner immediately flies ahead by a mini-break with a great running passer (3-1) but immediately recovered by Cobolli (3-3). A double fault, however, doomed the Roman (3-5): Sinner did not forgive and closed with serve (7-4).

Thanks to this victory, Sinner flies to the quarterfinals of the”Erste Bank Open‘ where he will take on Kazakhstan”Alexander Bublik, number 8 in the seeding and 16 in the world, who overcame Francisco Cerundolo (6-4 6-2) in two sets.
