A fabulous Tommaso Giacomel wins the Hochfilzen sprint, which opens the Austrian weekend. For the 25-year-old Azzurro this is the second career victory, less than a year after his success in the Ruhpolding mass start last season.

The Light Blue financier’s race was always at the top of the charts, with a final acceleration that cut through any opponent. Perfect in both shooting sessions, Giacomel was also very fast on skis, finishing with a time of 23’04″5, 4 seconds better than Frenchman Eric Perrot, and 6 better than German Philipp Horn. All three top performers did not make any mistakes on the shot and set up a tight finish, from which the Italian rider himself emerged the winner.

Lukas Hofer finished in 28th place with 2 errors and 1’30″3 disadvantage, while he is 45th Patrick Braunhofer, 1 error, at 1’55″8 Over 50th place Didier Bionaz, Elia Zeni, Christoph Pircher. There are still five Azzurri qualified for the pursuit.

Giacomel thus climbs to third place in the overall standings, still led by Norway’s Johan-Olav Botn (now fourth) at 300 points, followed by Sweden’s Sebastian Samuelsson at 224, just one point ahead of Giacomel, who is at 223. Scheduled for Saturday is the pursuit, starting at 12 noon and live on Eurosport.
