Marco Villa recharges Filippo Ganna and celebrates women
The words of Marco Villa
Historic and spectacular gold for the women’s pursuit quartet, which beat Great Britain, set a new Italian record (4’09″760) and, above all, took the women’s pursuit to the roof of the world. It was a title we had never won and more than made up for the disappointment of seeing the rainbow jersey slip off the shoulders of the men’s pursuit.
In the decisive test, coach Marco Villa fielded the quartet that had already starred in the qualifiers, with Elisa Balsamo, Chiara Consonni, Vittoria Guazzini and Martina Fidanza consoling him in the best way possible after the final lost by Filippo Ganna and his teammates in the men’s field.
“Too bad for the men’s quartet with whom we left something on the road. Now it will be important to analyze and understand where there is room to recover. It was not easy for me to find the right square with the girls either. Different ratios and training loads are used. Above all in the last few months, however, the foursome has arrived at excellent times. This team can do very well in the years to come as well. Until Sunday there are competitions and, especially in the Olympic disciplines, we want to do well. Friday night there is the individual pursuit with Filippo Ganna, the omnium and then the kilometer with Boscaro and Bianchi. Young guys with good skills.”
