Among tennis fans, and especially among admirers of Jannik Sinner, the countdown has already begun to see the world No. 2 back on the court after the disappointment of Doha, which saw him soon exit the tournament (it was the quarterfinals in Qatar) at the hands of Czech Jakub Mensik. Meanwhile, a curiosity emerges from the circuit that tells much about the respect the South Tyrolean has earned among his colleagues.

Revealing it was Sebastián Báez, interviewed by the Argentine daily La Nación. The number 32 ranking compared Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, two of the symbolic faces of the new generation of world tennis.

“Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are completely different players,” explained Báez, who has faced them both. In November 2024, he was pummeled by Jannik in the Davis Cup quarterfinal: 6-2, 6-1 in 73 minutes. Speaking of the Spaniard, the class of 2000 from Buenos Aires emphasized above all his unpredictability and creativity: Alcaraz alternates between slice, lob, bunt and powerful shots with great naturalness. “This kid always has an answer, he can hit in any direction. In addition to extraordinary talent, he has incredible leg power,” he added.

Different, however, is the feeling when Sinner is on the other side of the net. “With him you feel suffocated. If you leave him a short ball he chastises you right away,” Báez recounted. The Blue, after all, makes very few mistakes, especially in response, maintains a very high intensity and knows how to defend with great solidity.

According to the Argentine, against Alcaraz a few more errors can be expected, but it is precisely his unpredictability that makes him dangerous. Sinner, on the other hand, may seem more linear in his game, but he has an impressive consistency. “He always plays in the right spot, he’s a machine,” he summarized.

And it is this almost mechanical regularity that gives rise to the nickname by which some colleagues call him, “Robotito,” or “little robot.” An unaffectionate nickname only on the surface, which is actually an acknowledgement of his precision and continuity at the highest level.
