On the sidelines of the presentation of the Trittico Regione Lombardia 2022, Sportal.it exclusively interviewed Beppe Saronni.

The former world champion spoke, of course, about the road race at the rainbow event scheduled for Sunday. “When you don’t have a favorite rider, you have to rely on circumstances and opportunities. Italy doesn’t have a real leader, but the Azzurri have to be good at taking a chance. We used to lose the World Cup only because of internal quarrels, today it is not like that anymore, cycling has changed. We are waiting for a young man who will come sooner or later.”

Even in stage races the situation is similar: “Nibali cannot be eternal, he has done great things. Cycling history is made in the grand tours, and we just have to wait.”

In the time trials, on the other hand, Italy can count on a champion like Filippo Ganna, who, however, disappointed this time at the World Championships: “A bad day can happen, especially when you’re under pressure,” Saronni stressed, before an earful. “We always expect a lot from him but I’ve always told him, he has to choose a more precise path and targeted appointments. He will get there too….”
