F1 Ferrari, Mattia Binotto explodes against Fia and Red Bull: ‘Ridiculous’
Ferrari team principal Binotto lashes out at Federation decisions
Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto exploded in the aftermath of the Japanese Grand Prix. The Maranello executive, who already has strained relations with the Federation over the budget cap case and Perez’s non-penalty in Singapore, lashed out at Sky’s microphones over the commissioners’ decision to penalize Charles Leclerc by 5 seconds in the Suzuka race finale for cutting the chicane: the Monegasque lost second place and the title went to Verstappen.
“I congratulate Verstappen for the title, but on the FIA and the penalty I have little desire to comment. It is now ridiculous and unacceptable. Last race it took them three hours to decide something that also made little sense and today instead in a few seconds they decided something that again in our opinion makes no sense. There was no advantage gained by Charles. There was no advantage because he was in front and in front he stayed. When we saw the note for unfair advantage we were calm that nothing would happen and instead, a few seconds later, they decided, without hearing from the drivers this time, five second penalty. Like also the start today, without starting behind the Safety Car in critical conditions, then a crane on the track: a whole series of events that show that the situation is not simple and needs to be improved.”
Binotto assured that this is not the end of the story: “There is a risk of losing credibility, we will talk about it in the appropriate fora. It is unacceptable to see how the decision was made today, in the face of what is not even an earned advantage and without having had a chance to listen to the drivers. What was decided last time in Singapore then, I really don’t understand: two identical infractions, two different penalties. On the first one a Perez who, poor guy, fails to follow the Safety Car. That’s how it is, we have to take note of it and above all we have to figure out how to improve this situation because this is not good.”
