F1, drastic new rule coming: those who do this will retire
Fia amended the regulations ahead of the 2023 World Cup
The Fia has published a new version of the regulations that will come into effect from the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship. The Federation wanted to shed light on a particular situation that occurred at the start of the British Grand Prix, when George Russell got out of the car to rescue Chinese Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu, and then was unable to resume the race despite the fact that a red flag had stopped the Grand Prix.
The decision caused controversy, and now the Fia wanted to clarify by creating a specific rule: “Any car abandoned on the circuit by its driver, even temporarily, will be considered to have withdrawn from that session,” the new article reads.
But an exception is possible in the case of a suspension in a Gp or sprint race: “In exceptional circumstances, cars abandoned on the circuit during a suspension of a sprint session or race may be allowed to participate in the resumption of that session, provided that they were not abandoned because of a mechanical problem, damage to the car or to gain an advantage.”
