Novak Djokovic yes or no: Nick Kyrgios sends a clear message to Australia
Opponent and “host,” his message is clear.
Nick Kyrgios already has his sights set on the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam in 2023, and especially someone who has always come on strong in Melbourne until his recent controversial exclusions from the tournament: Novak Djokovic.
The Serb still does not know if he will be able to return to the Australian Open, due to his well-known decision not to take the COVID-19 vaccine, which once again could oust him from the draw. An eventuality that Kyrgios, an Australian himself, does not seem to like at all. And it is clear from statements he himself has made to his home country’s media.
“Tennis cannot afford an absence like Djokovic’s,” Kyrgios said, “Nole is irreplaceable, as well as one of the real reasons why I decided to play the sport. Not seeing him here would be very difficult, and I am convinced that Australia will welcome him with open arms.”
In the past week Goran Ivanisevic, coach of the Serbian outfielder, had also addressed the long-standing issue during an interview with ‘Sportske Novosti’. “His thoughts and opinions on the vaccine have not changed in any way,” he had said about Djokovic’s possible participation in the Australian Open 2023. So we will have to understand what the Australians will decide and act accordingly.”
