World League, Setterosa gets off to a strong start with Canada
Italy-Canada 16-9
A sweeping victory, a fluent performance and conserved psychological and physical energy. The SuperFinals of the World League in Tenerife start in the best way for Setterosa, which, in the debut match of Group A, overcame Canada 16-9 (3-2, 4-3,6-1, 3-3). The Azzurri, dragged by an attack that transformed all chances into numerical superiority (6 out of 6), led 7-5 at halftime and then produced the decisive breakthrough in the third half with back-to-back goals by Avegno, Marletta, Bianconi, Giustini and Bettini that made the decisive 13-8 with eight minutes left in the match.
Carlo Silipo’s national team will return to the water on Thursday (at 11:20 a.m. Italian time) in the match that could already be decisive for passage to the semifinals. It challenges the Netherlands, defeated 9-6 by the United States, which is aspiring for its eighth consecutive title. The last precedent between the two teams is a fresh and sweet memory for the Azzurri: the final for the European bronze medal in Split last Sept. 9 won 16-13.
