Matteo Berrettini between regrets and goals

It has certainly not been an easy season for Matteo Berrettini, who has often been forced to skip major events due to numerous injuries. The Italian spoke about his season in an interview granted to arabnews.com, on the occasion of the Diriyah Cup, an exhibition tournament that saw him lose in the opener to Stan Wawrinka.

“Mentally it has been a very difficult year,” Matteo began, “I started very well in Australia, I was in the best moment of my career and had very high expectations for the tour on clay and grass, but I got injured. I tried to take advantage of the rest period to recharge my batteries and come back stronger. I decided to have surgery and take some time away from circuit life, which can be wearing and exhausting. I spent my time doing things outside of tennis and improving aspects of my game. When I came back I felt great, but the inconvenience of having COVID at Wimbledon marked a before and after.”

“There were many ups and downs because I never felt good physically and healthy,” confessed the Italian number two. “I am working hard in training to be more reliable physically. Last year I finished all the tournaments with some kind of discomfort and I think it was also related to the stress generated by the many problems I had. I think I put too much pressure on myself to get points and stay high in the rankings. Now I feel better, I have learned from what I experienced and I know I have the level to get into the top-10, I just need to be more consistent.”
