The words of Marta Bassino

The Women’s World Cup makes a weekend stop in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, for two giant slaloms starting on Saturday, January 7 (9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.) and Sunday, January 8 (9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.). On the schedule are the fifth and sixth events of the season between the wide gates, in a ranking that sees Marta Bassino in the lead with 300 points ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin with 260 and Lara Gut-Behrami with 252. And it is precisely the Piedmontese alpine who leads the Italian team, which also fields Federica Brignone, Roberta Melesi, Asja Zenere, Elisa Platino and South Tyrolean rookie from Valdaora Laura Steinmair, who is a member of the Amateursportclub Gsiesertal. On the other hand, Laura Pirovano, who was initially entered, will not be there and has decided to continue downhill training ahead of the next stage in St. Anton.

“In these days we have prepared well on the Zoncolan,” says Bassino, who is back from six consecutive podiums in the specialty, “the track of Kranjska Gora has given me great satisfaction in recent years and it suits my characteristics. However, every race has its own story and you have to face it with the utmost concentration, on Saturday there will be two very competitive heats, with many pretenders to success. As usual it will be the will to win that will make the difference, I will go on the attack without making too many calculations.”

The precedents speak of two triumphs by Bassino in 2021 (arrived one day apart), a third place by Bassino herself in 2022, a second place by Federica Brignone in 2012 and Nicole Gius in 2007, and a third place by Sofia Goggia in 2018.
