After beating Novak Djokovic praises Jannik Sinner

“The semifinals of a Slam are hard-fought matches. The score doesn’t tell the reality of what happened on the court. The third set could have been won by him. He got a few things wrong and allowed me to get to the tie-break. Sinner showed why he is one of the leaders of the new generation.” Novak Djokovic said this at the end of his 6-3 6-4 7-6 semifinal win over Jannik Sinner on grass at the Wimbledon tournament.

“I try not to look at age as a distinguishing thing. Thirty-six is the new twenty-six! – jokes the Serb in the official interview on center court at the end of the match -I still feel the inspiration to play the sport that I love and has given me so much. I feel gratitude and want to return the favor to the sport by playing as much as I can.”

Novak Djokovic is up to 34 consecutive matches won at Wimbledon; he has not lost since 2017, when he retired in the quarterfinal against Czech Tomas Berdych. He captured his 35th Grand Slam singles final, an all-time record including women: in fact, Chris Evert stopped at 34. On Sunday she will go after her 24th major to keep her Grand Slam hopes alive and increase the record of triumphs that already belongs to her.

Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon landed in a Slam semifinal for the first time; until his victory the other day against Russian Roman Safiullin he had played four quarterfinals, losing them all. He was the third Italian to reach the semifinals on London’s grass after Nicola Pietrangeli in 1960, when Slams were still forbidden to those who were officially professionals, and after Matteo Berrettini two years ago.
