Marc Marquez: Wayne Gardner concerned points a drastic way forward

Former racer Wayne Gardner, the 1987 500cc world champion, gave an interview to ‘Motosan’ in which he spoke about the delicate situation of Marc Marquez, who has been hit by several injuries in recent years.

“Marc has had many injuries, but then he comes back and gets injured again. In my time, you could get seriously injured with five or six crashes a year. Now, however, with all the equipment today, riders get injured less, but they fall more. Bottom line: they get away with it. I found myself in the same condition as Marc, in a situation where you’ve had a lot of injuries and it’s hard to win again,” he stressed.

According to the Australian, Marquez should choose a drastic path: “The mentality changes, the body weakens and everything becomes a circle of frustration. My opinion is that Marquez should retire while there is still time. I’m a big fan of his, but I’m afraid he’ll hurt himself if he tries to come back. The bikes have changed, the riders are much younger. He is already 30 years old and the mentality is different. I am not saying this from a critical point of view, I am worried about his future life. He has to understand that he still has 50 years to live.”

“Winning another race after winning eight World Championships should not be a priority now. In my opinion he has done enough. The problem is that Marc is so, so competitive that he keeps racing faster and faster until he falls. We’ve all been in that situation and one day you wake up and you say maybe you shouldn’t take so many risks and you’d like to enjoy the rest of your life. That’s the way I look at it today,” Gardner closed.
