Mikaela Shiffrin leads after the first run of the giant slalom in Lienz, Austria, with Federica Brignone in fifth at 1″63. The U.S. skier è found herself at ease among the tight jerseys and on the ice of the Tyrolean course, stopping the clock on’1’01″82 with a 0″63 lead over Sweden’s Sara Hector and 1″03 over Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel.

Provisional fourth place then went to Switzerland’s Lara Gut Berhrami (1″49), who was ahead of Brignone and New Zealand’s Alice Robinson, who were paired in fifth place. A couple of line errors in the second sector of the Schlossberg put the brakes on Brignone’s downhill run, winner of the last two World Cup giants held, in Tremblant (Canada) but the podium still appears within reach for the 33-year-old from La Salle.

Good tenth place in the middle of the race for Sofia Goggia (+1″76) with Elisa Platino 21st at 2″63 just ahead of Asja Zenere and Roberta Melesi paired in 23rd at 2″64 from Shiffrin. Also finding room in the second run was Lara Della Mea, 30th at 3″15; unqualified was Laura Pirovano, 49th. Instead, Marta Bassino’s race ends too early, slipping in a curve to the left after about ten gates.
