ATP Brisbane, Grigor Dimitrov repeats after seven years: ‘It means a lot to me’
Grigor Dimitrov King of Brisbane
Seven years later, Grigor Dimitrov repeated himself in Brisbane, becoming champion of the "Brisbane International presented by Evie". The Bulgarian tennis player beat Holger Rune in two sets (7-6 6-4) in the final of the Australian tournament, breaking a fast that lasted more than six years (the last career triumph dates back to his victory in the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals).
"I started here in Brisbane and I really think it will continue,‖ he remarked during the award ceremony. It's a trophy that means a lot to me.
I want to thank my team and my parents who are at the airport, they sent me a picture while they were following this match. I am really tired and I think I will take a few days off, (laughter, ed.), but I will keep going and thank everyone for the support you have given me".
"To have faced top players much younger than me, and to have done it so well, made me realize where I stand,& added the world number 14. And è this is the thing that makes me most proud. However, I don’t want to set myself any high expectations. The fact that I played well here doesn’t mean that then I always have to win. I remain focused on my game, on the work I have to do on a daily basis and on everything I do with my team".
"I think for" that doing all these things well can help to make that happen. There is still a week to go for Melbourne" and everyone will be there and everyone will be ready to give battle. It will be played best of five sets and it will be a completely different tournament" concluded Dimitrov ahead of the Australian Open.
