Rory McIlroy wins the Hero Dubai Desert Classic
The Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the first tournament of the 2024 DP World Tour Rolex Series, goes again to Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman, world No. 2, è won with a total of 274 (71 70 63 70,- 14) strokes, overtaking Poland's Adrian Meronk, 2nd with 275 (-13) and recently honored as the circuit's best player in 2023.
In the UAE, after dominating the competition in the first three rounds, American Cameron Young did not è go beyond 3rd place with a score of 276 (-12). While Guido Migliozzi from Vicenza, the only Italian to make the cut, climbed 26 positions in the last round, finishing 25th with 285 (73 68 75 69, -3).
After last week’s mock second-place finish in the Dubai Invitational, McIlroy celebrated his 10th victory (figure including four majors and three WCGs) on the circuit, embellishing a champion palmares also characterized by 24 successes (including majors and WGC) on the PGA Tour.
The third title in a Rolex Series event earned him $1,530,000 against a total prize pool of $9,000,000, also allowing him to enshrine the record of four wins in this event that he already had in 2009, 2015, 2023 and 2024. Back-to-back then for the 34-year-old from Holywood who, in the final round, made three birdies, with one bogey, moving up from second position.
Not even time to take a breather, the DP World Tour remains in the United Arab Emirates and will return to the spotlight Jan. 25-28 with the Ras Al Khaimah Championship.
