Australian Open: Carlos Alcaraz out in surprise, Alexander Zverev in semifinals
Carlos Alcaraz defeated and eliminated by Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. It's a day to quickly forget for the Spanish tennis player, who was overpowered by the German who won in four sets with the scores of 6-1, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. The world number two è unrecognizable and in confusion in the first two sets, in which he was totally dominated by his opponent.
With his back to the wall, the former world number one had a reaction of pride and in the third set, down 5-2, è managed to overturn the result by winning at the tie-break.
The challenge è continued in the fourth set: Zverev è did not break down after an initial break-counterbreak, and avoided the Spaniard’s resounding comeback by placing the decisive break in the ninth game.
What made the difference for the German was his excellent return of serve and dazzling form, which enabled him to overcome two consecutive marathons (with Norrie two days ago he had won only on a super tie-break). In the semifinals Zverev will face Daniil Medvedev, fresh from a battle won in the fifth set against Hurkacz.
