Matteo Berrettini declares forfeit for Roland Garros

After missing the tournaments in Madrid and Rome, Matteo Berrettini will not play Roland Garros either. The Roman tennis player, through a message on his Instagram profile, announced his official forfeit from the Parisian Slam.

"Although I am training intensively I still do not feel ready to play more " best of 5-set matches. Therefore, I have decided, with my team, to return to the court for the season on grass. Thank you, as always, for the continued support. We just need to have a little more patience" this is Berrettini’s message on Instagram.

Despite the forfeit, the Italian tennis player è appeared optimistic and after missing the last tournaments would be ready to return for the grass season, where he has achieved the most important goals of his career including the Wimbledon final in 2021 and two consecutive titles at Queen's (2021 and 2022). The Rome native, in addition, would have already recovered from tonsillitis and the aftermath of his injury, however, he still decided not to rush and work to the fullest toward future goals.

Currently Berrettini è number 96 in the Atp rankings. This season è returned to play after a long stop following a serious injury to his right ankle. Seven matches on the circuit, five won to win the title in Marrakech, two lost : first round defeats at the Miami and Monte Carlo Masters 1000. Matteo è also reached the final in the Phoenix Challenger in March (defeated by Borges in two sets).
