Jannik Sinner writes history

Jannik Sinner certainly won&#39t easily forget the day of Tuesday, June 4, 2024: beating Grigor Dimitrov in three sets, in fact, the South Tyrolean won the access to the semifinals of Roland Garros and just as he was playing the third set he reached the certainty of officially becoming, from Monday, the first Italian ever at the top of a world tennis ranking.

6-2, 6-4, 7-6(3) the partials in favor of the South Tyrolean, who unlike in the match against Moutet starts at a very high pace and leaves very little field to the albeit worthy opponent (number 10 in the ATP rankings). Much more balanced was the third fraction, the very one in which the news of Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal from the Paris cmpetition, due to the continuation of his right knee injury, made its way among fans.

Sinner looked like he could run away when he won the 5-4 break, but Dimitrov responded in the next game and the fraction needed the tie-break to be decided. The mini-game largely smiles on the San Candido native, who thus goes on to win, further improving his best result at Roland Garros.

Whatever the outcome of the tournament, Jannik Sinner will thus be the new world No. 1.

In order to defend the position, in fact, Novak Djokovic would have had to reach at least the final, an eventuality that will not materialize due to his withdrawal. The Italy of tennis thus celebrates another high point in a history that the young Jannik still wants to continue writing.
