Barcelona wins Spanish Super Cup, Real Madrid overwhelmed
Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, inflicting a humiliating 5-2 defeat on Real Madrid and giving its new coach Hansi Flick his first trophy.
It was a slap in the face to the Madrilenians even harder than the 4-0 loss suffered by Carlo Ancelotti’s gang last October in the league, precisely because on this occasion the Spanish and European champions hoped to take revenge and instead had to bow again to the blaugrana.
The match seemed to be getting on the right track for Real, which took an early lead through Kylian Mbappe, but a dominant Barcelona answered five goals before putting the brakes on the run partly because of the expulsion of goalkeeper Szczesny at the 11th minute of the second half for bringing down Mbappè who had thrown in the net.
The Madridmen although ahead only managed to reduce the deficit but never gave the impression they could turn the situation around. The Blaugrana responded to the Frenchman’s goal with goals from Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, on a penalty kick, Balde and Rapinha, who scored a brace.
There are now 15 Super Cups in Barcelona’s trophy cabinet, but this trophy è all the more welcome because it è was won not only against the archrival but also as a reaction to the controversial case of Dani Olmo’s carding, put on the field in the second half by Flick, already 5-1 up, just to seal a special evening.
