Jannik Sinner’s participation in the Madrid Masters 1000 tournament has also been the subject of debate among the Azzurro’s fans, who are concerned about the physical fitness of the world number one who will also have to face the Rome Internationals and Roland Garros in just over a month.

Sinner’s coach Simone Vagnozzi to Gazzetta dello Sport explained the reasons behind the choice of the South Tyrolean tennis player: “Jannik already during Monte Carlo has always been better as time has passed. If we had not come to Madrid, too much time would have passed between that tournament and Rome. He is fine, no need to worry. There is no better training than the match.”

Vagnozzi is not worried about a possible drop in energy: “When a player wins and plays well he wastes less energy. You can train three months very well, but if you get to the first match without rhythm, you waste more gas than someone who is confident. You have to find balance, be flexible, adapt. We will see when the tournament ends here and based on that we will schedule training. We made this choice because we believe it’s the best for the whole season on clay.”

Vagnozzi also talked about the dynamics within Jannik’s team: “I hope Cahill doesn’t leave… Although it’s not always easy to work in two, everyone has their own role. What is my role? I’m the pain in the ass-I’m the one who has to say the uncomfortable things. The bad cop, let’s say. Darren is more cheerful, the one who dilutes tensions.”

Alcaraz won’t be there: “Of course Sinner will miss him, too. Alcaraz challenges you and pushes you to improve. You go on the field and figure out what to work on. It also happened with Medvedev and with Djokovic. Great champions always push you to find solutions.”
