As the wait for Paul Matiasic’s next moves becomes more and more palpable, the city reacts with a strong and visible signal. Posters put up by the Curva Nord with the slogan “This can’t end,” which in a matter of hours has become the symbol of the concern that runs through the Trieste basketball environment, have appeared in several neighborhoods of Trieste.

The fans’ initiative, recounted by Il Piccolo, does not have the heated tones of a protest, but rather represents a responsible appeal addressed to the whole square. The supporters’ goal is clear: to keep the focus on the club’s future high and prevent the city from resigning itself to a possible downsizing, at a time fraught with uncertainties related to the American president’s disengagement.

The weekend could hold important news expected by the entire red and white community. The central issue remains understanding what Matiasic’s real intentions are. Taking stock of the situation is Sandro De Pol, a historical RAI voice and a great connoisseur of the Trieste environment. Interviewed by Il Piccolo, the former player stresses the difficulties of the moment: “At a time so lacking in certainties, deciphering Paul Matiasic’s real intentions is objectively difficult. Every hypothesis remains valid, but it remains precisely a hypothesis. What I can report, based on discussions with agents and insiders throughout Italy, is that in the environment it is now taken for granted that his experience in Trieste has come to an end. All that remains is to find out how and when the farewell will take place.”

“Certainly, one cannot reduce everything to money: passion, love and tradition belong to historical squares like Trieste, Bologna or Varese, and there is no question about that. That said, the crucial question is another: if Matiasic were to leave the Serie A, would Trieste have the economic strength to register and play in the championship? Net of appeals, petitions and cries of pain, the crux of the matter is all here,” De Pol explained.

“It is necessary to identify a figure to act as a collector. We need to quantify the resources available and structure alternative plans. Only once the real possibilities are understood can a concrete assessment be made. It is clear that everyone would like the A, but if the means are lacking, this must be taken into account. Who could be this collector? Someone who deeply knows both the sporting reality and the economic fabric of the Trieste area.”
