MotoGp, new rule divides fans: "Incomprehensible choice"

The Grand Prix Commission has made official a package of decisions related to the 2027 season, one of which has already begun to stir up discussion among fans: from 2027, in fact, wild cards in MotoGp will be abolished. Within hours, the choice of the Commission composed of representatives of FIM, IRTA, MSMA and MotoGp has ignited the debate among fans, insiders and nostalgics of small and big extras that have marked the history, even with some surprising results, of MotoGP.

The rule, in detail, establishes that no manufacturer will no longer be able to field an extra rider compared to the official line-up, regardless of their level of concessions. Instead, wild cards will remain allowed in Moto2 and Moto3. Beyond the regulatory aspect, the decision has a clear emotional impact: it means, in fact, saying goodbye to those special returns that in several cases have given iconic moments.

Ducatisti, for example, indeed remember with great affection Troy Bayliss’ incredible success in Valencia in 2006, while Dani Pedrosa’s fans cannot forget the Top 10 finishes of the “Jockey from Sabadell” in Jerez and Misano in 2023, in particular the double fourth place in the San Marino and Riviera di Rimini GPs. In addition, the possibility of seeing Valentino Rossi riding a MotoGp once again, an option that has often been the subject of discussion in the paddock, is permanently extinguished.

On social media, the reaction was immediate. Some fans welcomed the decision, arguing that wild cards were, in fact, the product of a bygone era. The majority of comments, however, tell a different story: disappointment, nostalgia and the feeling of losing a piece of the show. “Without wild cards MotoGp becomes less romantic,” writes one fan on Instagram. “No more Pedrosa, no more ‘last dance’ for Vale: incomprehensible choice,” adds another.

Waiting for the final cancellation, there will be a restriction on wild cards for this year as well: in fact, the Commission has clarified that this season it will not be possible to use the new 850cc bike that can be used from next years, even for manufacturers with concessions. A transitional measure that effectively anticipates the 2027 tightening.
