Fernando Alonso remains vague about his future

Fernando Alonso’s future remains to be decided: his contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of 2026, but the Spaniard does not rule out the possibility of renewing it for 2027 as well. Despite being 44 years old, the Iberian champion still feels competitive both physically and mentally, although in recent days there have been rumors of his possible retirement. Alonso, however, is in no hurry and will make a decision only in the summer. As he explained to Marca, “The truth is that I haven’t started thinking about the future yet,” said Aston Martin’s standard bearer, “However, I know that at some point this year, around the summer or soon after, I will have to make a decision, but for now I haven’t started an internal reflection.
The Spaniard, for this decision, emphasized the importance of the people he cares about: “I still have to talk to my family; I have to confront my people first to decide what I will do next year. I’m taking it very slowly.” In addition, the driver did not rule out other possibilities: “If I decide to stop competing, I know I will do it in another category, and as I have said many times, the Dakar is a possibility.”
Fernando also joked about Nico Rosberg, the world champion who stopped racing as soon as he won the World Championship in 2016: “You cannot decide when to stop, only Rosberg did,” he said laughing, “however, I am very calm and very satisfied with my career.
However, the two-time world champion does not rule anything out and leaves a question mark hanging: “I know that right now I am at 100 percent and I want to retire just when I feel that way,” said the Asturian, “you can’t have an absolute certainty, but I think my performance is good enough to show the team that I can bring results if the car is competitive. Finally, Fernando Alonso showed a lot of confidence: “I’m helping the team a lot, so the decision may depend largely on me.”
