Italy’s repechage to World Cup: apology arrives but it may be too late

Iran’s exclusion from the FIFA Congress in Vancouver has sparked a diplomatic case that has cast shadows on the participation of Tehran’s selection in the upcoming World Cup scheduled in Canada, the United States and Mexico. While the biggest concerns so far have been about the move to the U.S., the rejection of the Iranian delegation at the airport in Toronto, Canada, has only increased doubts about Iran’s presence at the World Cup.
Aware of the serious rift created, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström issued a formal apology to Mehdi Taj, President of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and invited him to attend a meeting in Zurich in the coming days, while expressing “deep regret” over the situation.
“On behalf of FIFA, I learned with great regret that it was not possible for her to enter Canada to attend the FIFA Congress and that she subsequently returned with the rest of the Iranian delegation. Upon learning of this incident, FIFA immediately took action at the highest level with the local authorities to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the fact that these efforts did not yield the desired results and for the inconvenience and frustration this situation has caused you and your team.”
The governing body stressed that although admission decisions are the responsibility of national authorities, FIFA reiterates the importance of representation of all affiliated federations. The Zurich meeting is expected to take place on May 20 and will be crucial in planning for Iran’s participation in the 2026 World Cup. FIFA has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a “safe environment” for all participating teams, but obstacles seem increasingly evident as the war between Iran and the U.S. continues.
Italy like the other eliminated selections that could be repechaged for now is watching as an interested spectator as events unfold, waiting for news.
