Jannik Sinner is gone but the Italians still competing at Roland Garros continue to make people dream.

Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi are the three bishops who will take part in the round of 16, and for all three of them, placed in the part of the draw where, Cobolli included, there are just three seeded players, they have a great chance to make a splash in the only Grand Slam tournament on clay. Also seen in Paris among the spectators was Filippo Volandri: intercepted by Eurosport, the captain of the Davis Cup team had his say.

“Dreaming is right, and it’s right that our three guys do it,” he said. “The opportunity is for them, but it’s also for their opponents, given the unexpected eliminations: these things can happen, it’s part of the game at a high level. Now, by the way, the weather conditions have changed: it goes down seven‑eight degrees, it is not so hot anymore and this can help, for example, Matteo Berrettini. In any case, the boys are used to being chameleon-like and dealing with pressure.”

Then a note of pride for the role that Davis Cup experience continues to play in other contexts as well: “Yesterday Flavio Cobolli said that Davis has helped him a lot in quickly adapting to different surfaces, and as captain I am proud to hear him say that. Davis is also a tool to deal with the circuit,” explained Volandri, winner of three consecutive salad bowls as captain (2023, 2024 and 2025).

Cobolli, Berrettini and Arnaldi will be engaged on Monday in the quarterfinals: the former will face U.S. surprise Zachary Svajda, the latter will try to “avenge” Jannik Sinner by seeing off his executioner, Juan Manuel Cerundolo, while the third has the most complicated task on paper, having to face the number 19 seed Frances Tiafoe.
