Matteo Berrettini qualified for the second time in his career to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. The Italian tennis player beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo in three sets 6-3, 7-6, 7-6, avenging his friend Jannik Sinner, who had exited at the hands of the Argentine after a sudden collapse in the second round. The Roman tennis player, who confirmed his current great form, will face the winner of the match between Tiafoe and Arnaldi in the quarterfinals: now anything is possible for the 2021 Wimbledon finalist.

The Azzurro started off strong and in the second game immediately sent a signal to his rival, breaking. The Argentine struggles to keep up with the Italian’s pace, and in the fourth game he has to save three break points to hold serve. Instead, Berrettini goes like a train on serve and closes the set 6-3 with no surprises.

In the second partial, the serves rule: Cerundolo seems more at ease, but at the tie-break the Roman is superlative and with a series of spectacular plays he rips the applause of the French audience and guarantees himself a 7-2 win in the tie-breakers and the second set.

Cerundolo takes a break between the second and third partial, and asks for a medical time out for a discomfort in his right leg. It started again with a solid Berrettini on serve, but the Argentine also continued to serve well and in the fifth game surprised the Azzurro by hitting his first break of the match. The Roman tennis player’s reaction is textbook, and in the tenth game comes the counterbreak. It goes to the tie-break, where Berrettini does the encore: the Italian saves three match points and closes 8-6 the challenge.
