Italy’s repechage to the World Cup, Fabio Capello goes against the grain

Fabio Capello does not hide his regrets over Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup. The former coach of, among others, AC Milan and Juve reiterated his attachment to the national team, stressing how he would have welcomed the Azzurri’s presence at the World Cup.

“I cheer for Italy in every way and I would have liked to see the Azzurri at the World Cup. Some people do not think like me however everyone has their own ideas. I would have been very pleased to see the Azzurri jersey at the World Cup,” he told Sportal.it microphones exclusively, on the sidelines of Milan Football Week being held in CityLife.

Just on the subject of the relaunch of the national team, Capello had already indicated his path in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport last May, identifying Antonio Conte as the ideal profile to lead the Azzurri’s reconstruction: “He has already coached the national team, he faced the 2016 European Championship with good results and so it would be the return of someone who knows the house. He is prepared and determined, he has that desire and grit that he can transmit to the players, at this moment perhaps the Azzurri team really needs such a motivator.” More skeptical, on the other hand, about Pep Guardiola’s candidacy, for Don Fabio unsuitable for the role of selector: “The national team is another job, you don’t work every day, and that’s the difficulty: you’re not a coach, you’re a selector.”

In the meantime, Bosnia, which eliminated Italy, will be a protagonist at the World Cup. The rescued team, undefeated for seven matches before its debut in the rainbow competition, reached the final stage of the tournament after beating the Azzurri in the very playoffs, confirming that it is a solid and difficult reality to face.
