The soccer world is mourning the passing of Anthony Renton, a young soccer player only 27 years old who passed away after a long battle with leukemia. Renton grew up footballing at Middlesbrough and in recent years had embarked on a coaching career in the English club’s youth academy.

The passing of Anthony Renton was announced by Middlesbrough in a note circulated on the club’s social channels: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our former Academy player Anthony Renton. He was an extraordinary person and an inspiration to many. For nearly nine years, he fought bravely against leukemia, never allowing the disease to tarnish his love for soccer.”

“A highly prospective defender, he had just signed his first professional contract with Boro when he was diagnosed with leukemia in July 2017. Despite the many difficulties and continuous obstacles he faced during his battle with cancer, Anthony has always been an example of strength, determination and positivity.”

“In recent years, he has dedicated himself passionately to the role of coach, even working with our Academy for a time. His commitment to supporting the growth of young soccer players, both on and off the field, will forever be remembered and he left a valuable legacy for so many kids and their families across Teesside.”

“His dedication was recognized in March 2026, when he became the first, much-deserved recipient of our MFC Academy Alumni Award. Anthony passed away peacefully over the weekend at the age of 27. At this time of immense sorrow, our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with his family, friends and all the people who had the privilege of knowing him.”
