With less than two weeks to go before the start of Wimbledon, former Swedish champion Mats Wilander has taken stock of the favorites: Carlos Alcaraz will not be there, and Jannik Sinner, the defending champion, is once again the favorite. But according to Wilander, it won’t be easy for the Italian to repeat his success.

“Novak Djokovic has a great opportunity. In Paris, he lost to a great Fonseca, but Wimbledon is the Grand Slam where he has the best chance of winning and finally reaching the record of 25 Grand Slam titles, which has become almost an obsession,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“On grass, the gap with Sinner narrows, partly due to statistics: on clay, there are between 10 and 20 opponents who can beat him; on the grass in London, that number drops to five.”

According to Wilander, Sinner remains the top favorite: “At Roland Garros, however, he had a better chance; grass, on the other hand, is always treacherous. He played a lot in the two months leading up to Roland Garros, with little time to recover and few opportunities to train intensely, so he found himself running out of energy. Now that he’s rested, we’ll see him in top form upon his return.”

In London, Zverev, the recent Roland Garros champion, could also be among the potential contenders: “I still have one goal I haven’t achieved: becoming world number one,” said the German, who also admitted that Sinner’s elimination at Roland Garros put him under unexpected pressure. “When Sinner lost, I didn’t sleep a wink that night. Suddenly I was the clear favorite of the tournament, a situation I had never experienced at a Grand Slam
