2026 World Cup: Another Storm Breaks Out Over Gianni Infantino; Criticism Pours In on Social Media

A new wave of controversy surrounding Gianni Infantino. The FIFA president has come under fire from fans for his constant presence in the stands at nearly every match of the 2026 World Cup, including even some played simultaneously, such as Ecuador vs. Germany and Curaçao vs. Ivory Coast on June 25. This was made possible by the relative proximity of the stadiums hosting the two matches (one in East Rutherford, the other in Philadelphia, about 150 kilometers apart), but it has sparked debate on social media.

According to Infantino’s critics, the flights he took to attend as many matches as possible are in direct contrast to the messages of environmental sustainability that FIFA has repeatedly emphasized in recent years. On Facebook, X, and Instagram, the criticism is scathing: some speak of “hypocrisy,” others joke about “presidential teleportation,” and still others accuse FIFA of preaching one thing and doing another.

This, however, is just the latest spark in a World Cup already marked by tensions and protests. The controversy over the expansion to 48 teams, the media handling of potential wild-card entries, the privileged relationship with Donald Trump (perceived as far more central than the leaders of the other host countries, Canada, and Mexico), and the confirmation that the U.S. president will attend the final’s award ceremony have fueled a climate of growing discord.

Adding to the situation is the controversial hydration break, introduced as an official measure to prevent heat-related issues but met with strong opposition from players, coaches, and fans. Every halftime break is met with roars of disapproval from the stands, with many insiders viewing the break as something that disrupts the flow of the games and serves more to generate advertising revenue than to benefit the game itself.

Amid controversial venue changes, unpopular decisions, and a World Cup that continues to generate friction, Infantino remains at the center of the storm. And, especially on social media, the storm shows no signs of abating.
