Jannik Sinner defeated American Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, advancing to the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2026, the third Grand Slam tournament of the current season on the famous London grass courts. The world No. 1 handled several tricky moments in the match with authority, showing signs of improvement compared to his first two matches against Miomir Kecmanovic and Nuno Borges, in which he had faced greater difficulties.

On Sunday, July 5, the South Tyrolean will return to the court for another knockout-round match. His next opponent, however, will not be the young Spaniard Rafael Jodar, ranked No. 26 in the ATP rankings, who was considered beforehand to be one of the most treacherous potential obstacles in the Italian’s path. Surprisingly, Jodar was eliminated by Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki, who staged a comeback to win 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4. It will therefore be the 23-year-old Japanese player who will challenge Sinner for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Mochizuki arrived at Wimbledon ranked No. 151 in the ATP rankings, though he has already climbed several spots thanks to his run in London. Coming through the qualifiers, he defeated Vitaliy Sachko and Gauthier Onclin before staging a comeback against France’s Clément Tabur after trailing two sets to one. In the main draw, he then eliminated Britain’s Basing and the American Quinn, ultimately pulling off the upset against Jodar.

Born in Kawasaki, the Japanese player was considered one of the most promising young talents in world tennis after his triumph at the Wimbledon junior tournament in 2019 and his semifinal appearance that same year at the Roland Garros junior tournament. However, the transition to the professional ranks proved more challenging than expected. His highest ATP ranking remains No. 92, achieved in November 2025. On the Challenger circuit, he has won two titles—in Barletta in 2023 and in Nouméa in 2025—while one of his most prestigious achievements was his victory over Taylor Fritz at the 2023 Tokyo tournament. In 2026 as well, his season unfolded primarily on the Challenger circuit, with few notable appearances in major tournaments. For this reason, his run at Wimbledon represents one of the tournament’s most significant surprises.
