A coaching shakeup at Virtus Bologna; Vildoza’s replacement is ready

Luca Vildoza’s stint with Virtus Bologna is now coming to an end after just one season. According to reports from the Serbian website Meridian Sport, the Bianconeri and the Argentine point guard have reached an agreement to mutually terminate his contract. Finalizing this departure is a crucial step in allowing the club to complete the deal that is expected to bring Canadian Marcus Carr to Bologna, where he is set to round out the point guard rotation alongside Bello and Casarin. The Bologna management is carrying out a veritable revolution at the point guard position.
Vildoza’s departure is just the latest in a long series of departures that are completely reshaping the Vu Nere’s roster. From Carsten Edwards to Nikola Akele, many players have decided to move on following a season that was far from thrilling. It’s a true rebuild, with the Bologna club determined to completely revamp its roster ahead of the upcoming season.
The Argentine point guard arrived in Bologna last summer: born in 1995, Vildoza had signed a multi-year contract with the Vu Nere, bringing with him an impressive resume. His list of achievements includes, among others, the Spanish league title with Baskonia (as MVP), the Serbian league title with Red Star, the EuroLeague, and two Greek titles with Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, as well as a brief stint in the NBA with the New York Knicks and the Milwaukee Bucks. ““I’m happy to be a new player for Virtus Bologna and to become part of this family!” he had declared upon his arrival. However, twelve months later, that enthusiasm faded sooner than expected.
It should be noted that his season in Bologna was also affected by physical issues: during the playoffs, general manager Paolo Ronci had pointed out that Vildoza was among the players lost to injury during the postseason, which helped weaken a Virtus team that was subsequently eliminated by Reyer Venezia 3-1 in the semifinals.
Vildoza’s departure, however, is not the only high-profile split Virtus has experienced during this heated summer transfer window. Even more symbolic was the departure of Alessandro Pajola, a club icon for eleven years, who bid farewell to the fans with a long letter posted on Instagram. “I’ve thought long and hard about this, and I don’t feel I need to justify myself to anyone, because my actions have always demonstrated and reflected the person and athlete that I am,” wrote the Italian national team point guard, hinting that the split had not taken place under the most amicable circumstances.
