Serie A Transfer Market: James Rodriguez Is an Opportunity for Many—He’s a Free Agent, So Who’s Interested?

A star who certainly no longer shines as brightly as he once did, but who has proven to have more integrity than many would have expected. James Rodríguez has partly put a few decidedly unfortunate seasons behind him by putting in a solid performance at the 2026 World Cup with Colombia, playing five matches as captain of the Cateferos and making a particularly strong impression against Portugal. The rising star of Brazil 2014 is now 35 years old, but he doesn’t look like the player his stints in Mexico and the MLS would have suggested. And the fact that he’s currently a free agent following a rather abrupt departure from Minnesota United makes him a potential opportunity for several Serie A clubs.

One such club is Lazio, with which James Rodríguez had already been linked in the summer of 2024, though nothing came of it at the time: this year could be the right one, provided Gennaro Gattuso gives the green light. Fiorentina is another intriguing option; the club has targeted international soccer legends like David De Gea in recent years and could try again with the Colombian attacking midfielder. Atalanta is a bit further off the radar; the club is trying to reshape its midfield following the arrival of Maurizio Sarri, and after retaining Ederson and signing Gaetano, it is looking for a talented playmaker with great footwork. However, the three-front campaign the “Dea” will face this season (Serie A, Coppa Italia, and Conference League) makes this a less feasible move: they need reliable players, especially from an athletic standpoint. Even in the face of a golden opportunity given the (zero) transfer fee.

It must be said that James’s path to the 2026 World Cup was anything but improvised. The Colombian had already made a name for himself in the South American qualifiers, where head coach Néstor Lorenzo had consistently deployed him as an attacking playmaker in the Cafeteros’ 4-2-3-1 formation. This consistent performance convinced Lorenzo to rely on him even in the final phase of the tournament, where Colombia finished first in Group K ahead of Portugal, defeating Uzbekistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and drawing against the Portuguese in a match in which the South Americans had created more scoring chances.

On the Lazio front, the club’s ownership and coaching structure has become even clearer in recent weeks. Gattuso, who signed a contract through 2028, has stated his intention to make targeted moves in the transfer market, emphasizing that financial resources are not unlimited and that “we’ll have to make as few mistakes as possible.” The coach confirmed the need for a center back following Mario Gila’s departure, though he left the door open for moves in other positions as well. In midfield, he said, “we have quality players”: a sign that the potential arrival of James Rodriguez should be carefully evaluated and is by no means a foregone conclusion.

On the Atalanta front, however, the situation has taken an unexpected turn for the worse. What seemed like a done deal—the transfer of Ederson to Manchester United for 45 million plus bonuses—has spectacularly fallen through after the second part of his medical exams, following which the Red Devils decided to pull out of the deal. This is a massive blow to Atalanta’s finances, as the club had already planned further investments in the transfer market relying on that cash. The only signing already in the works for Sarri’s midfield remains, for now, Gianluca Gaetano, acquired from Cagliari: a versatile player capable of playing both as an attacking midfielder and a playmaker, well-suited to the Tuscan coach’s playing philosophy. In this context, a free agent like James Rodriguez could come back into the picture, but concerns about his physical condition remain valid.

After all, this isn’t the first time the Colombian’s name has been circulating in Italian soccer circles. His recent history tells the story of a brilliant talent grappling with a downward trajectory, but also of a capacity for a comeback that few expected. He had already shown encouraging signs at the 2024 Copa América, scoring on a penalty kick in the resounding 5-0 victory over Panama that propelled Colombia into the semifinals. That consistency in performance—which he then regained at the 2026 World Cup—is the trump card James intends to play to convince a Serie A club to take a chance on him.
