After coming through the first hurdle without a blow (Roberto Bautista-Agut retired during the first set, when he was already down 4-0) Matteo Berrettini is preparing for an absolute challenge in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, where he will face a Daniil Medvedev who, after very good indications in Indian Wells, where he reached the final by beating Carlos Alcaraz before being defeated by Jannik Sinner, slipped to the third round in Miami, against Francisco Cerundolo.

The Roman tennis player, current No. 90 in the rankings, and his Russian rival, who re-entered the Top 10 right at the No. 10 position, will face each other starting at 11 a.m. on the “Ranieri III” court: also scheduled for live television broadcast on Sky Sports, on channels 201 and 206, and streaming on NOW. It will be the fourth overall head-to-head between Berrettini and Medvedev, who haven’t played each other in as many as four years.

All three previous records smile on the Moscow champion: in the very distant 2018 the first previous, 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-4 in the 32nd final in Indian Wells, in 2021 success in the ATP Cup final by 6-4, 6-2 and the following year another victory, this time in the group stage of the tournament divested right at the end of the 2022 edition, with the final score of 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4.

In terms of career successes, Medvedev has won 23 tournaments, the last of them in late February 2026 in Dubai due to forfeit in the final by Tallon Griekspoor. Berrettini, on the other hand, has lifted 10 trophies in the major circuit, although he has not won since Kitzbühel 2024, when he defeated Frenchman Hugo Gaston in the final act in two sets, 7-5, 6-3.
