F1, revolution on the'horizon: the future of three legends hangs in the balance

The implementation of the new regulations is still shaking up Formula 1 with the championship underway, but there is another revolution on the horizon, linked this time to three very important names in the Circus. Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton could in fact, for different reasons, say goodbye at the end of the season, taking away in the total tally of World Championships won among the drivers on the grid as many as thirteen titles (the Briton’s seven, the Dutchman’s four and the Asturian’s two).
The Red Bull driver has never hidden his disappointment with the new rules: “I want to drive in F1 to have fun, but now I’m not succeeding. I’m coming to think it’s not what I want to do anymore,” he recently said. Moreover, Verstappen himself has already admitted not to rule out the possibility of taking advantage of the exit clause from his contract with Red Bull, should he fail to finish among the top two in the championship.
If the Austrian team’s standard bearer is dissatisfied, for Fernando Alonso the scenario is different, although leading to the same solution. “Aston Martin will win a World Championship, I’m sure of it. The question is whether I will be behind the wheel,” the 1981-born driver, struggling with the enormous difficulties of the British stable and the Honda-branded power unit, told Spanish media. The lack of competitiveness could convince him to close for good a very long career, which began in Minardi back in 2001 and was interrupted in the two-year period 2019-2020 before returning to the Circus.
The one most motivated of all seems to be the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton: “The new F1 reminds me of karting, with constant position swaps,” said the Ferrari driver, who aims to forget a difficult first year in Rosso. However, the 41-year-old from Stevenage will assess his future based on his performance this season: at the window, among others, is Ollie Bearman, a star with Haas and in Ferrari orbit for years now, having also been part of the Academy.
