Former striker and current Sky Sport pundit Paolo Di Canio in an interview with Corriere della Sera spoke at 360 degrees about the situation of Italian soccer and Serie A: “We are getting used to mediocrity, we get indignant and then after two days we go back to talking about Italian players as if they were the strongest in the world. Meanwhile, we in the media are not doing our duty well.”

Among the few stars of the national team is undoubtedly Gianluigi Donnarumma, but Di Canio made a major criticism of the current Manchester City goalkeeper: “For me he is strong strong, but sometimes he makes mistakes as a cheap player that Buffon used to make every three years. In some teams one duck in the wrong game nullifies ten miracles.”

The Azzurri’s other great champion is Tonali: “Where would I see him well? At Inter, which already has a real director. He is our best movement player by far but where does he play? In the 10th team in the English league….” On the Bastoni case Di Canio had this to say: “Hysteria on one side and the other. He simulated once, not a hundred. There is so much hypocrisy, those who accused him turn the other way if the same thing happens in Lecce-Sassuolo instead of Inter-Juve. They boo him like they booed me in England when I got 11 days of disqualification for pushing the referee. In those cases you don’t care, you show you have two balls like that and you keep playing.”

Di Canio then returned to target Milan striker Rafael Leao: “Why renew a player who was stronger at 21 than he is now at 26? A player who continues to trapper and fashion shows? He is always injured, recovers late and who knows why. Milan without him wins and convinces, is a cohesive team. Do you want to start from there or from someone who does as he wants and also demands to be pampered? I would have no doubts.”
