Sofia Goggia told in an interview with Corriere della Sera how she got her degree in political science from Luiss in Rome: “I remember the compelling need that drove me to enroll. I had felt it years before, but it had remained latent. Instead, that day in November 2020, after Covid, I felt something vehement while I was on the Bontadini chairlift in Cervinia.”

“I wrote to Giorgio Avola, an Olympic team foilist in London. He had often spoken to me about Luiss, so I asked him to put me in touch with those who could get me a scholarship: in September 2021 I “enlisted.”

The skier from Bergamo explained her method of study this way: “It was a ‘journey’ that was not easy. In some subjects they give you a tutor and you do online lessons; in others they tell you ‘this is the book, see you at the exam.’ All 26 of them I had to take in-person: I gave most of them in June, in the summer session. In the height of the competitive season I couldn’t do anything. However, if I knew I would have a window to participate in the winter session I would study even in October, November and even December. Right after the races I would go down to Rome.”

“At first, since I hadn’t studied for years, I had to recreate a method. A tutor helped me in a strategy of scheduling exams. Paradoxically, I had the “luck,” yes in quotes, of the serious foot injury: it was time for a full immersion of eight exams in eight months.”

The choice of Political Science: “First of all because I love the humanities. After high school I had enrolled in Philosophy, in Bergamo: but there was no way to reconcile study and sports there. This faculty made me explore various aspects: economics, law, history, politics, finance, communication.”
