When Carlos Alcaraz returns: not a reassuring picture for Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz is not hiding his big dream: to return in time for the grass season. This is the message leaking from the latest news about the Murcian tennis player after the announcement of his forfeit from the Rome Masters 1000 and Roland Garros. The question on everyone’s mind in Spain is one: will he be able to arrive in London with the right physical guarantees?

According to Spanish media reports, Alcaraz has an inflammation in the tendon sheath of his right wrist, namely tenosivitis. Tests showed a non-reassuring picture: a rather significant inflammation that could have turned into a more serious problem if the tennis player had forced by continuing to take the court.

Rafael Nadal a few years ago had a similar injury and returned to the court after a two-month stop, but recovery can vary from tennis player to tennis player. Carlos’ goal now is to return to Queen’s to regain some condition and show up in decent shape for the Wimbledon tournament. Like Nadal, Alcaraz has opted for conservative treatment: ice to reduce inflammation, immobilization of the wrist with a brace, absolute rest, and zero activity with the hand.

The goal is to return in mid-June then, but the team does not want to force anything, and risk tendon rupture: Alcaraz will return only when he feels 100 percent, even if it means being out for four months. Healing is evaluated week by week, depending on how the pain evolves and how the athlete feels: at the moment, the hypothesis of returning for the season on grass remains more of a wish than a certainty.

His athletic trainer Alberto Lledó Quiles wanted to send a positive message on social media: “Difficult moments are part of the journey. When an obstacle appears, you have two options: let it get you down or use it to your advantage. We chose the second one. This period will allow us to work on what goes unnoticed when you are competing. We will come back more motivated and stronger than ever!”
