Inter, double comeback in Turin: from 0-2 to 2-2 in nine minutes

Inter slows its race toward the Scudetto, but only in theory. In Turin, the Nerazzurri build a double lead on the field of the Granata, who, however, in the last twenty minutes manage to catch up with the leader on a draw. On the contrary: just nine minutes separated the two goals of the hosts, for a comeback that might not have consequences anyway. Cristian Chivu’s Nerazzurri are still missing three points to graduate as Italian champions, obtainable already on Sunday, May 3, by beating Parma at San Siro.

After the first fireworks in the opening ten minutes (Akanji grazes the post, then on the other side Coco concludes too high), the match seems to go downhill for Inter. In fact, at 23′ came the winning shot by Thuram, who was good at taking advantage of Dimarco’s cross but also of a less than perfect exit by Paleari. Torino’s goalkeeper made up for it in the opening of the second half by walling off Dimarco’s goal, then Ebossé saved everything on Darmian.

At 61′ the match seemed to close, when on a corner Dimarco caught Bisseck who doubled his header. It all seemed to be over, but suddenly Torino resurrected: in 70′ Simeone opened and closed a counterattack with Ilkhan beating Sommer, who in the following minutes saw the same Simeone graze the post in the split and had to work miracles on Njie’s conclusion. However, there was also a touch of the arm in the box by Carlos Augusto, referee Mariani awarded the penalty after reviewing the incident at Var, and from the penalty spot Vlasic converted at 79′. Initially stunned, Inter gave in to nervousness and only as time expired did they come close to scoring the winning goal: Zielinski’s low shot was just wide.

The draw at the Olimpico Grande Torino thus came on a day when the Nerazzurri saw their lead over the chasing pack shrink. Napoli, second in the standings, had done its part on Friday night by demolishing Cremonese 4-0 at the Maradona, a result that did not alter the balance of power at the top by much. With the point won on Sunday in Turin, Inter’s lead over the partenopei drops from 12 to 10 points, with four days still to play: mathematics is still on Chivu’s side.

For Inter, however, this is the sixth consecutive useful result in the league, after the three victories in a row that had preceded this away trip. The last success in order of time had come precisely against Cagliari at San Siro, with a net 3-0 signed by the goals of Thuram, Barella and Zielinski. Thuram himself, still in goal today, confirmed himself as one of the most in-form men of the moment, with Dimarco continuing to be the main provider of assists for the Nerazzurri team.

The appointment with the Scudetto is therefore only postponed. On Sunday, May 3, San Siro is preparing to welcome Parma, an opponent that has meanwhile clinched mathematical salvation thanks to Nesta Elphege’s goals on the last two days, against Udinese and Pisa. The Crusaders will arrive in Milan with no ranking pressure, but Inter will have the whole home crowd to push them toward the title that has been missing since the 2023-2024 season.
