Alexander Zverev was unable to find countermeasures to Jannik Sinner’s brilliant and unpredictable tennis in the Madrid Masters 1000 final. The world number 1 took just 58 minutes to dominate the match, imposing himself with a clear 6-1, 6-2 and winning the title for the first time in the Spanish capital.

During the awards ceremony, however, the German acknowledged his opponent’s superiority in very clear words: “I’m sorry about this final, it was not my best day. Congratulations to Jannik: he is by far the best in the world right now. For almost all of us there is no chance. You (referring to Sinner and Alcaraz, ed.) are doing a great job, maybe at Roland Garros you’ll take a break,” he said jokingly.

Hot on the heels of that, Sinner also wanted to have generous words for his opponent: “You had another great week, even though today was not your best day. I wish you the best for Rome and Paris.” The Italian then analyzed his performance with satisfaction, “I started very well, getting the break right away. Today Zverev maybe did not express his best tennis, but I tried to start strong and take over the match. I am very happy with my level: to win such an important title again means so much to me.”

The world number 1 then wanted to emphasize the collective work behind his achievements, “Behind these successes there is work, dedication and commitment every day. Continuing to believe in myself, in every practice, with the right discipline, is what makes the difference. And then there is an amazing team behind me: there is a lot of talk about me, but these results are thanks to all of us.” Finally, Sinner thanked the audience and the organization with a nice promise: “Thanks to all the Italians who follow me from home, the Madrid audience and the organizers, who make this tournament special. Next year I will also try to speak in Spanish.”
