Rome, Jannik Sinner’s new mission: avenge his friend Matteo Berrettini

Jannik Sinner got off to a great start at the Internazionali d’Italia. He got rid, in a peremptory manner, of Sebastian Ofner. Now, on the path of the world number 1 is Alex Popyrin. The Australian gave himself the challenge with the South Tyrolean by clearly overcoming, in the first round, Matteo Berrettini.

In short, Jannik Sinner has one more reason to win against the Australian, namely to avenge the defeat of the friend of many battles, especially in the Davis Cup. Clearly, the Italian outfielder is interested in continuing to do well for himself, but the idea of stopping the Australian’s run even for Matteo Berrettini tantalizes him even more.

The number 1 on the Internazionali d’Italia draw knows Alex Popyrin very well, a tennis player capable, if on a good day, of putting anyone in trouble. The two have faced each other three times already with the Italian leading 2-1.

The last challenge in Doha, last February, with Jannik Sinner winning. Then we have to go back to 2021, at the Madrid Masters 1000, with Jannik Sinner defeated in two sets, while, last year, at the US Open 2025, the Italian won outright 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Popyrin is currently ranked number 60 in the ATP rankings.
