Jannik Sinner’s surprising defeat at Roland Garros is triggering many reactions among colleagues and insiders. Even former Azzurro Fabio Fognini wanted to have his say on his social profiles after the Azzurro’s sudden collapse in his match against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. “Something happened that no tennis fan believed could ever happen: Jannik was leading two sets to zero and 5-1 in the third when his body suddenly gave up on him. He himself said it wasn’t heat stroke or cramps; he simply said he couldn’t take it anymore. Suddenly, his body said stop.”

“This makes us think, as he himself said, that we are not robots. And if the number one in the world says that, we open our eyes guys… Of course it’s sorry because he was number one, he plays these tournaments, however, these are problems that you have to accept. He lost a match that he was completely dominating and probably, forgive me Juan, out of 10 times he loses half of them.”

“You have to congratulate Cerundolo because he took his chance and did his thing, while Jannik had no more, he lost court, depth and responsiveness, he was out of energy and empty. It hurts a lot, but let’s always remember one thing: Jannik remains Jannik,” Fognini closed the speech, making the number one sign.

Aryna Sabalenka, women’s world number one and a friend of the South Tyrolean, wanted to express her sympathy to Sinner. “I felt very sorry for him. I was always rooting for Jannik and to see him suffer like that was really painful. I believed he would win, until the last ball, and I hoped he would succeed,” the Belarusian told a press conference. “What happened to him is sad, but I am confident that he will come back even stronger. Now, I guess, it’s time to recover, rest and get ready for the grass season. It’s a shame to see him leave the tournament so soon.”
